Am repeating the walk i did back in 2023, taking in the point, not the longer walk i did this year, if you havnt had the chance to visit Sunderland point and would like to then please come.
Join us for a 6km walk looking at Heysham and the hills beyond as we walk along the shoreline towards Sunderland Point. The village is only reached by a road which is under water twice a day. Sunderland stands for Sunder or asunder, apart from.
As we walk round the coast towards the point, we will see the Plover Scar lighthouse which can also be seen from the walk round from Glasson Dock. A few old cottages from the village still remain and we will walk round to where the road goes over the marshes to Overton. Before walking down “the lane” and heading back.
Sunderland Point is a unique village of around 30 houses at the end of a tidal causeway, between the mouth of the river Lune and Morecambe Bay. It was once used as a port serving cotton, sugar and slave ships from the west indies and Africa Sambos Grave, is in memory of a slave or servant called Sambo, he was left in Sunderland whilst the master travelled on to Lancaster to do business. He was left there and died from perhaps a European disease he had no immunity to, no one really knows.
Plover Scar Lighthouse built in 1847 also known as the Abbey Lighthouse is still active and recently was renovated after a vessel navigating into the docks ran into it.
