Date: 22nd October 2017
Time: 10:30
Activity Length: 270 mins
Activity Run By: Janine Lewis
Location: Avebury National Trust Car Park
Type: Nordic Walking, Special Event

Starting at the heart of the Avebury World Heritage Site, this walk takes you through the remains of the largest stone circle in the world and along the West Kennet Avenue into beautiful, rolling chalk downland. The walk is 6 miles and we are aiming to complete this in under 3 hours, allowing for photos, oohs and aahs!

You'll catch glimpses of mysterious Silbury Hill, pass Bronze Age burial mounds, and walk along ancient roads with fabulous views.

Afterwards, we can then meet at the local pub, The Red Lion, for refreshments.

Our Pawdic Walking canicross element will apply for our friendly dogs. Please do check with Janine first.

This session is aimed at gear 2+ - For those wishing to stride out we operate the "the whistle and loop back" fun strategy. It helps maintain our sense of community but addresses the different needs

Please do not book on to the session if you are not able to maintain this pace or speak to Janine for guidance.

It is advisable to wear a bum bag with a water bottle or hydration pack. Do bring a high energy snack to have on the hoof or as soon as we finish.

Key points:

  1. The ground is quite rutted and with chalky surfaces. Please wear sturdy footwear with grippy soles. Wet chalk can be slippery when wet.
  2. There are no toilets enroute and the area is quite exposed; thre are one or two trees and bushes! Please do wear or bring an extra layer as the wind can catch people out on higher ground.
  3. The pub serves hot food from 12pm-3pm. After out walk people can feel free to either eat, drink, or both at the pub, or use the National trust Cafe. Please do feel free to wonder through the village, this is now your free time to explore.
  4. The journey from junction 16 of the M4 was far easier to navigate than coming off at junction 14!
  5. There is poor phone signal so please double check your journey before setting out. Allow plenty of time for it. We shall meet by the National Trust information truck in the National Trust car park.
  6. There is a car park charge, bring loose change!

We respect people's busy agendas and do like to start promptly. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your class and be ready to start on time. Please do not be offended if we do not wait whilst you get yourself sorted. We do a warm up close by so please do catch up.

Walk speed guide:

Gentle stroll - Gear 1 - Nice pace that you can do for extended periods. 2-2.5mph (these generally are our Well Being walks)
Easy walk -Gear 2 - Faster pace gained through technique. Expect Gear 2 at times throughout the walk with occasional photo stops. 2.5mph (Most of our 1 hour adventure walks)
Moderate walk - Gear 2/3 - Faster again using technique and with less recovery. Very little stopping. 2.5mph-3mph+ (these are generally our Step up and Stride out Workout walks and longer Adventure walks)
Strenuous walk - gear 3/4 and Power Stride workout walks and Challenge training.

Booking online in advance is essential. This is to keep you safe and minimise the risks for these exciting walks.

You are asked to contact Janine by phone, leaving a voicemail or sending an sms text to 07792 550191, if you are likely to be delayed as we do start classes promptly.

Whilst we do understand that sometimes it is not possible to make a class, please be aware that we do operate a no refund policy if you give us less than 24 hours’ notice.
