Depending on the weather we will walk along the Mersey, visit Hardy Farm, Chorlton Ees, Ivy Green and use the NCN62 cycle route. Maybe even venture into Priory Gardens. Circa 3-4 miles mainly flat easy walking. Brew Stop at The Boathouse at the end of the walk.
Sale Water Park is an area of countryside and parkland with a lake, woodland, meadows, the River Mersey, cafe, restaurant and water sports centre. The lake was a gravel pit, flooded after extraction of gravel for the M60 in the 1970's. The land previously belonged to Sale Old Hall which once stood close to the site of junction 6. Historically the River Mersey was the traditional boundary between Cheshire and Lancashire. Jackson's Boat Inn was in Lancashire in spite of sitting on the Cheshire side of the river, an anomaly due to the natural changes in the course of the river over many centuries. During the Jacobite uprisings of the 18th century, Stuart sympathisers met secretly at the inn. toasting the health of the Pretender Bonnie Prince Charlie exiled in France at the time. Broad Ees Dole is a wetland wildlife nature reserve located to the north east of the park. Ees meaning wetland and Dole meaning plot of land allocated to the poor (a reference to its previous use). The reserve is home to spottted orchids, various wild birds and newts.
Nearest toilets are in the Boathouse Restaurant near Sale Water Park Main car park on Cow Lane or at Jacksons Boat Inn. The toilets at the Visitor Centre may not be open.
